How much nicotine is in a pouch?
The number on the can is the nicotine in each pouch. How much of it reaches your blood depends on the product and how you use it. Here are the strengths, the research, and a simple way to work out your own intake.
Short answer: US pouches range from about 2 mg to 15 mg per pouch. Pouches of 6 mg or less were the most commonly sold in 2019–2022, while sales of stronger 8 mg pouches grew faster.[5] Users take in only part of the label: about 56–59% for Zyn 3 and 6 mg in one study.[7]
Strengths by brand
| Product | Strengths (mg per pouch) | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Zyn | 3, 6 | FDA-authorized (Jan 2025)[2] |
| Zyn Ultra | 9 (Smooth: 11) | FDA-authorized (Aug 2026)[3] |
| on! | 2, 4 | FDA-authorized[1] |
| on! PLUS | 6, 9 | FDA-authorized[1] |
| Rogue | 3, 6 | Manufacturer listing[4] |
| Rogue Max | 9, 12, 15 | Manufacturer listing[4] |
| Velo and others | Varies; check your can | Not on FDA's authorized list[1] |
Strengths change as products launch; the mg on your own can is always the number to use. FDA's list was current as of August 2026.
What FDA authorization does and doesn't mean
FDA has authorized certain Zyn and on! pouches for sale. It says this does not mean the products are safe or “FDA approved”, the companies can't claim they're less harmful, and FDA can withdraw the authorization, for example if youth use rises.[2] The CDC adds that nicotine pouches are not an FDA-approved way to quit smoking.[5]
Label vs what you absorb
- Measured content: a CDC lab analysis of 37 brands bought around 2020 found 1.29 to 6.11 mg of nicotine per pouch, with a wide range in how much was in the most easily absorbed form.[6]
- Absorbed from Zyn:in a single-dose study, users extracted about 56% of the nicotine from a Zyn 3 mg pouch (about 1.5 mg) and 59% from a 6 mg pouch (about 3.5 mg). One author worked for Zyn's maker.[7]
- Compared with a cigarette:pooling 7 trials, a 4 mg pouch delivered about 92% of a cigarette's total nicotine exposure, and pouches of 8 mg or more delivered more than a cigarette. Nicotine peaked 20 to 65 minutes after a pouch versus 5 to 8 minutes after a cigarette. The underlying trials were small and mostly industry-funded.[8][9]
Work out your daily nicotine
Multiply the pouches you use a day by the strength on the can:
| Pouches a day | 3 mg | 6 mg | 9 mg | 12 mg |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 15 mg | 30 mg | 45 mg | 60 mg |
| 10 | 30 mg | 60 mg | 90 mg | 120 mg |
| 15 | 45 mg | 90 mg | 135 mg | 180 mg |
| 20 | 60 mg | 120 mg | 180 mg | 240 mg |
These are labelled amounts, not what your body absorbs. They're still useful for tracking: the step-down plan builder shows how your labelled daily nicotine falls week by week, and stepping down in strength (say from 6 mg to 3 mg) is another lever some people use alongside cutting the count.
Questions
How much nicotine is in one Zyn?
Zyn pouches authorized by FDA come in 3 mg and 6 mg, and Zyn Ultra in 9 mg and 11 mg. The number on the can is the nicotine per pouch. In one study, users extracted roughly 56 to 59% of the labelled amount.
Is a 6 mg pouch the same as a cigarette?
Roughly in total nicotine, but not in speed. A review of 7 trials found a 4 mg pouch gave about 92% of a cigarette’s total nicotine exposure, and 8 mg or stronger pouches gave more than a cigarette. Nicotine from a pouch peaks much more slowly, around 20 to 65 minutes versus 5 to 8 minutes for a cigarette.
Are FDA-authorized pouches safe or FDA approved?
No. FDA says its authorization does not mean the products are safe or “FDA approved”, and it can withdraw authorization later.
How do I work out my daily nicotine?
Multiply the pouches you use a day by the mg on the can. Ten 6 mg pouches is 60 mg on the label. That is the labelled amount, not what your body absorbs, which is lower and varies by product and how long you keep the pouch in.
